You can learn a lot of delf-defense skills but it won't help you if you lack the confidence to fight back! I see it a lot, teaching at Cape Coral karate for over 47 years. I was a black belt for years before I was confident enough to go on stage to demonstrate my skills! "Karate is 90% Mental and only 10% physical." Quote from Grand Master Willie Adams
This is ab old proverb, if a student lacks confidence, or they are not focused and are easily distracted they will not learn. If the students mind is full of fear and self doubt he/she will not hear what the best instructors are trying to communicate to them. But if we believe we can do it, we will reach our goals. Know the Karate beginners mind.
The way a teacher starts to help the student is to follow in the steps of a gold miner. The Miner has to move tons of dirt to find a small nugget of gold. The miner is not looking for the dirt. A good teacher does not look for 'dirt' or the mistakes of the student. They will look for the things the student is doing well and let them know with praise as they see them improve! At Cape Coral Karate we are also looking for gold :)
